Hastings is Kool-Aid's
original home

In 1927, Edwin Perkins invented Kool-Aid in Hastings, Nebraska. The six original flavors were strawberry, cherry, lemon-lime, grape, orange and raspberry (Mr. Perkins’ favorite). Kool-Aid was produced at 506-508 West 1st Street in Downtown Hastings, across from Burlington Station. Perkins Products were manufactured there until January of 1931. Nearly 80 years later, Kraft Foods owns Kool-Aid. Over 500 million gallons are consumed each year worldwide by Kids of all ages!

Kool-Aid Man...Oh Yeah!

Kool-Aid Man celebrated his 30th birthday at Kool-Aid Days 2005.
Here's a brief interview he issued for the press at that time:

Q.

Happy 30th birthday Kool-Aid Man!  Are you feeling good these days?

A.

OH YEAH!  I feel great!  It’s been a very hot summer, so I’ve been busy.  Thirsty kids have been drinking lots of Kool-Aid during the summer months.  So, I’ve been running ALL OVER the place.

Q.

You celebrated your 25th birthday with a footprint ceremony outside Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.  Do you have any big plans for your 30th?

A.

Well, I recently took up skateboarding.  It’s amazing! It’s a refreshing twist on some of the other extreme activities I’ve done before…like snowboarding, mountain climbing and inline skating. I thought it was a good idea to try something new for this big year.

Q.

Wow, that’s fantastic!  You’re certainly staying young at heart. You’ve been a very successful “spokespitcher” for many years and you continually rank as on of the most-loved brand mascots.  Why do you think you remain so popular with generation after generation of kids?

A.

Well, I think it’s because kids – and kids at heart – love Kool-Aid’s intense, fruity flavor.  Plus, Kool-Aid is available in 22 flavors, so there is a flavor to please everyone in the family.

Q.

I heard that Kool-Aid became the “Official Soft Drink of Nebraska” in 1998.  That’s quite an honor.  How has it changed your life?

A.

It was one of the greatest moments for me – just thinking about it makes me smile.  Since then, the Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History opened the world’s only permanent museum exhibit dedicated exclusively to the Kool-Aid story.  You can see some of my favorite outfits from the 1970’s and view some of my early commercial work.  It’s been a humbling experience, really.  I’m just glad I can help bring smiles to people’s faces.

Q.

So, what’s next for you Kool-Aid Man?

A.

Well, right now I’m just focusing on Kool-Aid Days in August. I’m really excited!  I think it’s going to be our best year yet!  OH YEAH!
